NEUROFEEDBACK

Please note: In-office training availability is extremely limited at this time.

Take advantage of your time at home

These are very stressful times but also an opportunity to help your brain to learn to manage stress in the comfort of your home. Dr. Rothenberg will help you purchase the appropriate equipment and then be available to remotely supervise and assist in running training sessions. This is an excellent use of your time at home  and is less expensive than in-office visits. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Rothenberg at 617-274-8734.

"EBT (EEG biofeedback therapy) should play a major therapeutic role in many difficult areas. In my opinion, if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy it would be universally accepted and widely used."

His mood has been stable and upbeat, his frustration tolerance higher, his social judgement back to normal. School work is still labored and slower in out-put than ideal, but, even in this domain, he is improving!”

What is Neurofeedback?:

Neurofeedback (or EEG biofeedback) is another powerful tool we use to help clients develop their social and emotional brains. Through visual and auditory feedback and based on operant conditioning learning principles, clients become more able to self-regulate and return their brains to a healthier state of functioning. Z-score neurofeedback uses real-time comparison of client’s brainwaves to a normed database to normalize brain function.

Will my insurance cover the cost of neurofeedback?:

Your initial visit and any psychotherapy (individual, family or group) visits should be covered by most insurances. However, insurance does not typically cover neurofeedback training.

How long will this take?

Sessions are typically scheduled in blocks of 10 and should be done at least twice weekly. Brain maps are usually readministered after each 10 sessions of training. Sessions are approximately 60 minutes long and will typically include using a number of different modalities within each session in order to optimize effect. The average number of sessions is 20-40 with some conditions responding before 40; others are more difficult and require 60 to 100. Some individuals will begin to notice changes after just a few sessions, but in some of the more complicated cases, major benefit will not be noted until after 40 or more sessions. Please expect to undergo at least 20-40 sessions. Although it is likely that improvements will be noticed before 20 sessions they may not be sustained without continued sessions. There appears to be a cumulative benefit of the number of sessions undergone. Approximately 85% of those trained have reported moderate to significant improvement when they have maintained the recommended schedule. Important note: Assessment and trainings are all performed personally by Dr. Rothenberg. He does not use assistants or technicians.

IN OFFICE FEES:

QEEG (Quantitative EEG, leading to brain map including generation of training protocols. (Procedure is usually repeated every 15-20 sessions): $1000 (one time charge).
Neurofeedback (including sLoreta Z Score Neurofeedback)): $300/hour session

OTHER MODALITIES:

We use state of the art equipment in order to promote efficient neuronal regulation. The following modalities are available to those who choose to pursue brain training (in addition to individual, family and group psychotherapy, if desired). The combination of modalities can often shorten the length of training.

NEUROFIELD:

NeuroField is an energy replenishment and stress reduction device. NeuroField is a four channel frequency generator that is capable of generating a low intensity electromagnetic pulse ranging from 1-40 microtesla which is 10,000,000 times weaker than a pulse given by rTMS devices. Since the output of NeuroField is so low, it is possible to give EMF stimulation faster than 20-30 Hz, at long durations, without the concern of generating heat thereby causing tissue damage. NeuroField theory is based on the premise that the human brain emits a field of energy that extends outside the skull. This field of energy is theorized to be an interactive conduit that can travel to any region in the body. NeuroField was designed after years of study, searching and research by Dr. Nicholas Dogris. Used in conjunction with other modalities, Neurofield can be a powerful addition and may shorten total treatment time.

HEG:

HEG (hemoencephalography) is the study of blood flow in the brain. More specifically, it is the study of voluntarily controlled blood flow or oxygenation in specifically chosen brain areas. Certain areas of the brain do certain things. The prefrontal cortex is involved with executive functions such as short-term attention and organizing; the temporal lobes are involved with memory functions, auditory processing, word finding and emotional responses and the parietal lobes are involved with direction. Brain anatomy and biology are important elements to the understanding of brain function.

VieLight Neuro:

The Vielight Neuro is a next generation transcranial-intranasal near infrared(NIR) headset, engineered for easy domestic use.
The Neuro is the world’s first transcranial-intranasal near infrared light (NIR) photobiomodulation device. It is based on the science of photobiomodulation, the utilization of low level photonic energy to stimulate mitochondrial function in neurons. It directs pulsed(10 Hz) NIR light energy to the hubs of thedefault mode network. video (DMN) of the brain using optimally engineered light emitting diodes (LED).
Research on DMN abnormalities and related neuro-pathologies are highly advanced, providing useful data for us to further develop the Neuro. This enables us to photobiomodulate the whole brain by targeting the DMN hubs. The efficiency of targeting the DMN enables us to utilize fewer diodes in 4 cluster heads in specific transcranial areas and 1 intranasal diode (5 areas in total) to deliver low level photons to the targeted network hubs.
Research studies in photobiomodulation show that damaged neurons regenerate when NIR light is present. The wavelength of 810 nm, pulsed at 10 Hz has been found to be the most effective wavelength for photonic penetration and neuronal healing. In human studies, pulsed NIR stimulation augments mental acuity, cognition, sustained attention, affective state and working memory.[i] combines patented technology of intranasal light therapy along with transcranial photobiomodulation for efficient and effective whole-brain stimulation that targets the brain's Default Mode Network (DMN) / (Illustration).
Ultra-short photonic pulses penetrate deeper when pulses are intermittent but set at high power. Pulsing, as opposed to continuous exposure, prevents the undesired thermal effect that accompany forms of energy.

Alpha-Stim

Treating anxiety, depression, and insomnia with CES (From the Alpha-Stim Website)
The Alpha-Stim® AID treats anxiety, depression, and/or insomnia with microcurrent using a method called cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES). The treatment is very simple. The current is applied by easy to use clip electrodes that attach on the ear lobes. You may feel a slight tingling sensation under the electrodes, but it is not necessary to feel this in order to achieve results.
Used just 20 to 60 minutes every day, every other day, or on an as-needed basis, CES can help induce a pleasant, relaxed feeling of well being. The Alpha-Stim® AID is well tolerated and very safe in contrast to drugs used in the treatment of mood disorders, many of which have been proven to have undesirable side effects and can be addictive. Unlike drugs, the Alpha-Stim® AID leaves the mind alert. Anxiety reduction is usually experienced during treatment. Depression and insomnia control is generally experienced after several weeks of daily treatment. CES can also help treat the underlying mood disorders associated with pain.
The Alpha-Stim® AID may be used as an adjunct to medication and/or psychotherapy. After treatment, there are usually no physical limitations imposed so the majority of people can resume normal activities immediately. Maintenance of a relaxed, yet alert state is generally achieved with treatments three times per week. As a result, the Alpha-Stim® AID is suitable for clinical or home use.
Treated conditions:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia

Alpha-Stim® advantages:

  • Low incidence of adverse effects
  • More efficacious than most other forms of therapy
  • Relatively easy to learn
  • Alternative in cases refractory to conventional care
  • Reduces or eliminates need for addictive medications
  • No tolerance
  • May be applied on schedule or PRN
  • May be self-administered by patients
  • Highly cost effective

tDCs
When a DC current is applied over the scalp with the intention of altering neuronal activity, it is known as transcranial DC stimulation ( tDCS) and has been found to be effective in modulating spontaneous neuronal firing. Implementing tDCS at intensities of 1 milliamp applied for roughly 10 minutes has been shown to either excite or inhibit the sensori-motor cortex, with the effects lasting over an hour. Excitation is achieved by anodal (+) stimulation, while inhibition is achieved by cathodal (-) stimulation. Anodal stimulation has also been shown to increase both beta and gamma activity in the visual cortex, while cathodal stimulation has decreased beta and gamma activity. Stimulation is generated by putting a wet cloth, cotton ball or sponge on the scalp over the brain region to be treated and a sponge or cotton ball on the shoulder or the face. The tDCS sessions deliver a maximum intensity of 2.35 milliamps at DC. tDCS is being used for the treatment of many conditions, including depression. (From Mindalive.com)
